Marcos Arruda introduced the meeting. He recalled the importance of this Workshop for the WSSE, due to its comprehensive and transversal nature. He underlined that participants should endeavor to create links with other Workshops in the WSSE and other areas of the Alliance 21. He also talked about the pluralistic nature of the Workshop and the need to debate different views and practices, aiming at developing a common understanding and a common vision, that integrates and, at the same time, respects cultural, geographic, gender sectoral and professional diversity.

Participants agreed with the three items of the agenda:

(1) Discussion of the Draft Work Plan;
(2) Define a possible list of names for the Facilitating Committee;
(3) discuss key themes for discussion.

Participants made suggestion about different aspects of the agenda.

Ben Quinones, underlined the need to establish what we want to achieve with the Workshop, since the participants represent a variety of perspectives seeking convergence and a common vision. How can a dialogue, he asked, between his sector - small and micro enterprises - with other sectors of SSE - social money, women, regulations and controls, fair trade etc. contribute towards a common project?

Chilo Villareal underlined the importance of taking opinions and visions from the grassroots through the interviews, and informed that she has already made five interviews in Mexico.

Aurélien Atidégla suggested that the Workshop objectives are pertinent, but we must define priorities.

The discussion of the specific goals proposed in the Draft led to the following sequences:
* Goals A, B and G as the driving force (see Draft Work Plan, Specific Goals, p. 2).
* (1) what vision; (2) what products; (3) what meetings.

Proposals were made with respect to the Draft Work Plan. They are now incorporated in the 2nd Draft, which will be circulated among all the Vision workshop participants.

ALL ARE ASKED TO :

  • EXPRESS YOUR AGREEMENT OR MAKE ALTERNATIVE PROPOSALS TO THE 2nd DRAFT WORK PLAN;
  • REGISTER TO THE VARIOUS ACTIVITIES PROPOSED IN THE PLAN;
  • COMMIT YOURSELVES TO THE FULFILMENT OF THE DEADLINES, ONCE THEY ARE APPROVED IN A FINAL VERSION OF THE WORK PLAN.

Facilitation Committee (FC)

Role: serve as a sort of core group of the Workshop, maintaining regular contact and supervising the implementation of the various aspects of the Work Plan.

Participants (by gender, sector, territory, profession):

  • Marcos Arruda : male, research/consultancy/WSSE-EGA, Brazil, economist and educador.
  • Ben Quiñónez : male, entrepreneur/Solidarity Finance/networker, Malaysia.
  • Chilo Villareal : female, SSE networker/RuralCoalition, Mexico/USA, religious.
  • Humberto Ortiz : male, Fair Trade/Pastorals/GRESP, Peru, economist.
  • Aurelien : male, Consultant, Directeur GRFAC/GRAPAL, Benin, Agronome socio-economist.

As you can see, we have a good regional diversity so far, but need better gender and sectoral diversity. We intend to have a total 10 persons in the FC.

FIRST MEETING: APRIL 22-24, 2004 IN PARIS.
The idea is to have a meeting of the FC with some additional participants who are already in Paris. Arturo Palma, for example, offered to participate, but did not clearly express interest in being part of the FC. We would like other persons from the various continents to volunteer for the FC.

THE SECOND DRAFT WORK PLAN WILL FOLLOW SOON
